Race Notes and Information

The Hellhole Gravel Grind Prologue, 2-Day Stage Race and 1-Day Race will take place on the gravel roads in and around Hellhole Swamp in the Francis Marion National Forest just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The forest is named for the revolutionary war hero Francis Marion, who was known to the British as the Swamp Fox. He used these swamps, creeks and forest areas to ambush and hide from the British and was depicted in the movie “The Patriot”.

The Friday evening Prologue will be an optional, time bonus event on an all gravel 6 mile loop near the Witherbee Ranger Station. The time trial style event will begin just before sunset.  Headlights and tail lights will be required. Riders will go start at 30 second intervals.  Start times are posted here!

  • Each participant in the 1-Day 42 mile race will receive a minimum of a 30 second time bonus over non-prologue participants.
  • Each participant in the 1-Day 75 mile race will receive a minimum of a 1 minute time bonus over non-prologue participants.
  • Each participant in the 2-Day Stage Race will receive a minimum of a 2 minutes time bonus over non-prologue participants.

Your prologue time bonus will be based on your result relative to other prologue participants in your race up to a predetermined maximum.

For example:

You’re racing the 1-Day 42 mile race. You finish the prologue 3:34 faster than the slowest prologue rider in your race.  Your minimum time bonus applied toward the General Classification is (3:34 + 0:30) or 4:04

2-Day Stage Race
The 2-Day Stage Race will be approximately 75 miles each day and will feature a different course each day. The courses will be 90%+ of unpaved roads and trails. This is a true stage race with the lowest cumulative time over the two days determining the overall winner.

1-Day Race

For those less ambitious (or those with more sanity), there will be a 1-Day, 75 mile, long course and 42 mile, short course race on the first day of the Stage Race Saturday, September 20th). The 75 mile course will follow the same route as stage one of the stage race. The 42 mile race will feature approximately 35 miles of the 75 mile course before splitting off and returning to the start/finish area.

One stocked aid station will be available on each day’s course and limited support will be provided along the courses.

The area in and around the Hellhole Swamp is a wilderness area.  Bring with you what you think you may need for before, during, and after the race.

Cutoff Times
Stage Race  – Riders must reach the mid-point aid station within 3.5 hours and must complete each day’s stage within 7 hours.
75 Mile Race - Riders must reach the mid-point aid station within 3.5 hours and must complete the course within 7 hours.
42 Mile Race  - Riders must complete the 42 miles within 5 hours from the start of the race.

Awards/prizes will be given to the top 3 finishers in each category of each race. Additionally, awards/prizes will be given to the top 3 finishers of each day’s stage of each category for the Stage Race racers. Cash payout for the top 3 in each category for the stage race general classification with a $1,125 cash purse (promoter reserves the right to adjust the cash purse based on the number of racers in each category of the stage race).  Podiums will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. There will be no podiums for the Prologue.

Rules and General Information

  • Helmets MUST be worn and fastened at all times while on the bike.
  • Parking will be available at the Witherbee Ranger Station (limited) and adjacent National Forest properties.  Please park only in designated areas and as directed by course volunteers.
  • The course and all roads are open to traffic. ALL racers MUST obey all rules of the road along the course, at intersections and road crossings. Racers should yield to all traffic, horses, and should stop at all road crossings where traffic is present. There will be several highway and road crossings with heavy car and truck traffic. There may be an area of the course where the racers will share the road with car and truck traffic. Please keep to the right and ride single file except where passing. Following the rules of the road is for your own safety.  The forest roads also may contain numerous potholes and riding in a paceline is not advisable.
  • Traffic in the National Forest includes horses and hikers. Horseback riders have the right of way on trails. Please ask the rider what to do if you encounter a horse on the trail.
  • Though there will be a stocked aid station (water, cytomax, pretzels, bananas, chips, etc) and limited support on the course, racers should carry with them what they need including tools, parts, bug spray, and nutrition.  We will have basic food available after the race, but racers should plan on bringing food for after the race.  The race is ~30 miles from the nearest town and food will be limited.  Do not underestimate the unforgiving nature of the forest.  This area is remote and you are likely to encounter bugs, snakes, deer, alligator, dogs, and other wildlife.  Cell phone overage is extremely limited.
  • Course cue sheets will be available to all riders at registration and the course download for navigation systems can be found here (available after September 5th) (requires Google). Additional cue sheets will be available at the start-finish area and at the mid-point aid station. The courses will be marked with signage.
  • Cyclocross, Gravel Grind, Mountain and Road bikes will be allowed and can be used. The best choice would be a cyclocross or gravel grind bike. A minimum of 28c wide tires with tread is recommended. Gravel can be very hard on tires and pot holes are numerous. Don’t ruin your race by cutting an expensive tubular in the first mile.
  • Riders of must use the same bike for all events. Riders will not be allowed to change bikes following the prologue or each days race. You must finish of the same bike you started on. Exception may be granted but must be approved by the promoter.
  • No tri-bars or aero bars (they are just weird anyway…).
  • Support crews are not permitted to help racers on the course except for the aid station. No motor pacing, no pacing from a rider not in the race, no external support. Limited SAG will be available and a sweep will be made of the course according to the appropriate cutoff time.
  • Please let the race officials or staff (wearing red HHGG Volunteer shirts) know if you leave the race. We want to ensure everyone is safe and accounted for at the end of the day.
  • Absolutely no littering on the course. Littering on course will result in disqualification. It is vital we leave the forest as we found it.  Alcohol/open containers are prohibited in the National Forest premises.

2014 SC State Time Trial Information


Thanks again to everyone who registered for this year’s South Carolina State Time Trial Championships.  We are looking forward to another great event. Please be advised of the following race information:

Parking–Parking will be located in the large sand lot adjacent to registration via the back entrance to the Sewee Outpost (from Highway 17N take a right onto Sewee Road then an immediate left into the Seewee Outpost rear access road-OR-turn right into the Sewee Outpost from Highway 17N and follow thier driveway around to behind the property).   Please be mindful of this as Sewee Outpost is gracious enough to allow us to use their property and DO NOT park anywhere except the sand pakring lot.  Please use the port-o-johns and not the Outpost’s restrooms (but feel free to offer them your patronage as a thank you for allowing us to use their property over the past 3 years!).  The address is 4853 US 17, Awendaw, Sc 29492.

Registration–Racer check-in and day-of registration will open at 7:30 AM and will be located near the Sewee Outpost rear access road and Sewee Road.  Please do not park or congregate along the road!!  Race Day Start times for pre-registered riders are posted here.  It is your responsibility to be on-time for your start.  If, for unforeseeable reasons, you cannot make your start time, you must inform the promoter as soon as possible.  Additional race information can be found here.

Safety–Safety is paramount.  Charleston County Sheriff’s Deputies and Team volunteers will be working intersections and turnarounds on the course, however, this is not a closed course.  Please obey all traffic laws and directions from police/volunteers and exercise caution at turnarounds and intersections and the start/finish areas. Please do not gather, warm-up, or unnecessarily congest the course near the start/finish line or the back entrance to the Seewee Outpost.  Feel free to warm-up on Fifteen Mile Landing Road (crossing Hwy 17 with caution…).  The course is well marked with signs and bright orange “TT” marking along the course.  Racers finishing the course should be mindful that traffic may be entering/exiting the course from Seewee Outpost parking lot.  Please exercise caution.  Also, SCDOT has installed rumble strips along the length of the course.  The strips are well into the shoulder and will not present a problem to riders (provided that you don’t ride on them!)

Awards–State Championship medals and podiums will be awarded to all winners (each category and top 5 overall) once results from categories are finalized.  Cash prizes for the top five male and female finishers will be awarded once all racers are finished.  Results and podiums will be posted near race registration as soon as they are available/finalized and uploaded to USAC as soon as possible.

Important Race Information (The Knot 2014)

The 2014 Knot MTB Race will take place in Sunday, March 1st beginning at 9:00 AM.  We will be on site for race number pick-up and day-of registration beginning at 7:00 AM.  We will be accepting cash, check (made payable to Mt. Pleasant Velo), or subject to internet availability, PayPal (to or credit card.  Registration for each category will close fifteen minutes prior to the the start of your wave.  Please see the race website for details on start times, race maps, and categories. The event is held rain or shine (and will only be delayed for serious weather).  As of now the forecast is calling for sunny skies and a 100% chance of awesome.  Please plan accordingly.

All are welcome to pre-ride the course while we set things up on Saturday. Please beware that the course has one road crossing.  This crossing will be manned with volunteers on Sunday, but it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure it is safe to cross.  Please also beware of this fact when you are arriving at the park; cyclists are everywhere!

As mentioned, volunteers and Park Rangers will be on course.  Please look out for them in the event of a mechanical or a crash.  Safety is our top priority and we want to make sure everyone has a safe and fun event!  Parts of the course run on the Palmetto Trail, which will be open for hikers, so pay attention.

Race parking for Sunday will be in the field at the end of Poinsett Park road near the Poinsett State Park offices. Please follow park signage and Park Ranger directions for parking.  Please be courteous to Park officials and volunteers and please respect the Park’s no alcohol policy; they are a huge part of our race and Poinsett State Park has done some excellent things for Mountain Biking in South Carolina.  Please be sure to thank them and please consider donating to the park.  Donation and information boxes will be available at the park and will go towards trail maintenance and development inside Poinsett!  Volunteers will also be on hand serving post-race food (for donation) and the park will be selling Knot Tshirts for $16.

Wanted to say a big thank you to everyone that participated and helped make the No. 1 Hellhole Gravel Grind a huge success!  Final General Classification results are now posted.  We’re already looking forward to next year’s race (but for now, we’re completely exhausted…)
